Foreign Minister Jaua: United States Violates Norms of International Law

“In the past few weeks, the United States has disrespected the most basic norms of international law,” said the Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Elías Jaua, in reference to the formal complaint the Bolivarian Government will make against the U.S. in the UN, OAS, Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and the Union of South American Nation (UNASUR).

Jaua noted that the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Roberta Jacobson, confessed to her interference in Venezuela’s domestic affairs when she explained in the Senate that the works with the opposition in Venezuela, some of whom had asked for sanctions against the country while others were opposed.  The Foreign Minister denounced this as interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs, which is expressly prohibited by the United Nations Charter.  As such, the U.S. cannot apply unilateral sanctions.

“This practice—[which is] absolutely illegal—of the United States government and its Congress of legislating unilaterally and applying extraterritorial sanctions against a country and its citizens is something we should also reject.  No country can apply nor enforce unilateral sanctions above international law,” Foreign Minister Jaua said.
