President Maduro Highlights Medical Research of Jacinto Convit

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela mourned the death of Venezuelan doctor Jacinto Convit, who passed away on Monday at age 100.

In a communiqué, the President highlighted “his dedication and absolute commitment to science” for the benefit of humanity.  Convit was a notable man who dedicated his entire life to scientific research, through which he made several discoveries, including a vaccine against leprosy.

This renowned research, who never entered private practice because it was against his nature, also dedicated himself to fighting leishmaniasis, a disease that causes skin ulcers and sever inflammation of the liver and spleen.

The following is the communiqué in its entirety:
Jacito Convit: 100 years of public service

Communiqué of the Presidency of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

This morning, with great sorrow the Venezuelan people received the news of the physical parting of a man who made medicine his entire life, our own Doctor Jacinto Convit.
It was a century of dedication, of knowledge, of absolute commitment to science for the benefit of humanity that resulted in the discovery of effective treatments against many diseases, such as leprosy and leishmaniasis.

Doctor Convit was honored with countless prizes in recognition of his investigative work, such as the Prince of Asturias prize and a nomination for the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

He was a warrior in the battle against diseases that stigmatized people.  This is, without a doubt, what led the name Jacinto Convit to be recognized as the height of medicine.

He will always be remembered for his tireless scientific work and the help he gave for the health of the peoples of the world, as well as his own battle against cancer.
They were 100 years of struggles, experiences, knowledge and joy for the people, of a man who, with humility and simplicity, devoted his life to the sick, the afflicted, the excluded, from his own battlefront: medicine.
