Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the FAO: "Hunger Eradication Program Developed by the FAO Will Be Called Hugo Chavez"

The director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, for its acronym in English), Raul Benitez, said Monday that the plan for the eradication of hunger advanced by the agency will be called "Hugo Chavez".

"It's the best way for us to honor this man who was so visionary in this topic.  He was 10 years ahead of the rest of the world leaders and he was effective," he said during an interview on Cruce de Palabras, a program broadcast on Telesur. He explained that currently the organization is progressing in implementing a program that allows the underprivileged access to food.

"Never before have we produced as much as now. Yet 840 million people go hungry in the world ( ... ) . The region (Latin America and the Caribbean ) has 47 million brothers who are still starving.  The problem is not food production, it is access to them," he said , while stressing that the regional bloc has been the most advanced in the fight against hunger in recent years.

In this regard, Benitez highlighted the commitment of multinational organizations committed to eradicating hunger such as the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR ), the Southern Common Market (Mercosur ), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), Petrocaribe and Caricom .

"There has been a strong political commitment of all the multinational organizations that exist in the region to eradicate hunger," he said . Benitez said that the FAO plans to eradicate hunger in the region by 2025, "and I think we will succeed ."
